Notes to our daughters

Christmas with Dreaming Always

We are all just given one life. One life to live exactly how we want to live. So do it. Decide. Is this the life I want to live? Is this the best you can be? Could you be kinder, more compassionate, more tolerant, more patient? Every level of your life will demand a different you. Life is full of set-backs, disappointment and failures. None of those things can permanently stop you. You have the power in you to overcome anything that life throws at you. No one is you and that is your power. You can do and be anything you set your heart to. You just have to believe that you can do it all. Everything you can imagine is real. Surround yourself with people that remind you that you matter, and support you in the ways that matter most to you. You will always be too much for some people. Those aren’t your people. Be good to people. In reality very little is needed to make a happy life. Life was made for making mistakes and taking chances. Enjoy yourself & celebrate every tiny victory. Stay soft. It looks beautiful on you.

Mama Meet-Up at The Glucksman Cork

We have spoken about our love for The Glucksman Gallery in Cork before (here) and it also proved to be the perfect venue for a mama meet-up recently. We invited some women that we have met via social media and some friends that we have known for years along to this special event. We handed over some creative freedom to our little ones for the morning with a craft workshop given by the amazing staff at the gallery. Us mamas chatted, drank coffee, ate pancakes, pastries and avocado toast and watched the kids get covered in glue, glitter and felt. Our perfect kind of Saturday morning.

Every meet-up we do is different. There is no one size fits all for our meet-ups but there is always a common goal. Our goal is to bring like-minded women who are navigating the choppy waters of motherhood together in a relaxed and intimate setting. We want to bring people together to dream, connect, talk, laugh and have them leave feeling like they are not alone and hopefully feeling inspired too.

Create the things you wish existed,

Looking Back

Dreaming Always with Sarah BlakeDreaming Always with Sarah BlakeDreaming Always Nessa HurleyBugaboo Dreaming AlwaysDreaming Always Cork Sarah BlakeDreaming Always Mamas and Papas

If only we knew then what we know now…

Whilst we were pregnant we spent our days obsessing over all the things we needed for the baby. We spent a small fortune on all of these essential matching items only to have our babies and realise that the panic to get the nursery perfect was all in vain because they don’t actually sleep there and you just live on the couch with your baby on top of you. Why didn’t we just invest in a fancy new couch?

We roar laughing when we think back to our obsession with finding the perfect buggy, changing bag and the most Instagram-worthy cot. Nessa had an obsession with finding a rose-gold buggy. Yes, she googled it and hunted a limited edition one down. Emie-Rose prefers her simple holiday stroller. Obviously she looks way cooler in her rose gold one though…

We spent our evenings online searching for the perfect grey and white wardrobes for our unborn children. Fast forward to a month after baby’s arrival and we are dashing to H&M for their super handy crossover vests – seriously they are the only things you need! – because newborns pretty much just wear vests and baby gros for at least three months and that comfort and practicality is key. No need for that mini denim jacket then?

Dreaming Always Shoot by Sarah BlakeDreaming Always Sarah Blake Photography Cork

You think you know but you have no idea…

We spent nine months preparing for our little one’s arrival and when they arrived everything went out the window. These tiny little creatures alter your life in the most unbelievable way. They come along and need you like nobody has ever needed you before. Their vulnerability is heartbreaking yet they are the strongest little people ever. The day that they are placed into your arms, they teach you. They teach you about perspective. They teach you about strength. They teach you about love. They teach you that nothing else matters – and suddenly a rose-gold buggy or an Instagram-worthy cot seem utterly meaningless.

Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life | Pablo Picasso

Like us, we are guessing that a lot of you are guilty of overlooking all the gorgeous things that are going on in your own city. Parks that you don’t even know exist, museums that you might not have ever visited and festivals and fairs that you skip each year. We are always looking for things to do in our home city of Cork, particularly since having children.

We visited The Glucksman art gallery recently which is located on the grounds of University College Cork in the most striking modern steel and limestone building. It is such a beautiful space. We are both big fans of gorgeous architecture and art. The gallery hosts contemporary exhibitions and installations by national and international artists and also focuses on education and children and has it’s own delicious restaurant too. It is so child friendly too with a huge lift that the kids were fascinated by. It is so worth a visit.

For three days in November, The Glucksman opens up its award-winning gallery spaces for their annual Craft & Design Fair and features over 50 craftspeople selling their designs in jewellery, ceramics, wood, lighting, textiles and new technologies. Throughout the Craft and Design Fair weekend from Friday 11th – Sunday 13th November, the creative team at The Glucksman will run art workshops for children aged 5-12 years so that parents can go off shopping whilst the kids make their own craft masterpieces. Genius. We are really looking forward to hosting our next mama meet-up at The Glucksman during the Craft & Design Fair.

We are also so impressed by the Kids Club at The Glucksman. It encourages creative thinking and imaginative play which we really think is so important for our little ones. Their year-long memberships for the kids focus on them being the creatives and art-collectors of the future. We just love it. It’s such a perfect Christmas present for the little creatives amongst us.

Creativity is contagious. Pass it on,

Mama Meet-Up Dublin

KID Store + Dreaming Always Meet Up

We knew our favourite Instagram mamas would be nice in real life, but we never thought that they would be SO nice that we would want to move to Dublin, hang out every single Saturday night and become best friends forever.

A few months back we made a visit to a store in Dublin called KID Store and we both fell in love. We decided that this collective of ten beautiful Irish brands just had to be involved in our first Dublin-based mama meet-up. We hadn’t done a meet-up outside of Cork yet so we thought it would be such fun to escape to the big schmoke, gather a group of great women together that we chat to regularly via Instagram to finally meet them face to face in the gorgeous surroundings of KID Store in Powerscourt Town Centre. We planned and hosted the event with our friend Sooby from the amazing kids magazine and blog Mutiny Kids. Actually, Nessa used to read Mutiny Kids online before she was even pregnant! It’s just put together so beautifully by Sooby & Lili.

It really was the perfect get-together for us mamas –  buying beautiful and very unique pieces from the designers at KID Store for our little ones (cos we rarely shop for ourselves anymore), bubbles, bites by Currabinny and insanely delish cupcakes & personalised cookies by The Cupcake Bloke that we were so impressed by.

Every now and then it’s just so important to surround yourself with people that make you feel inspired,

Thank you to KID Store & Mutiny Kids,

Happy Halloween, Witches

Dreaming Always Halloween Party

The only thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live only as you can.

We might have mentioned on Instagram before how much we love Halloween. We love playing dress up and we jump at any chance to style a fun table and so we thought who better to plan a kid’s Halloween party with but the Queen of Halloween herself – our pal Cathy. There was something just so magical about meeting up on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, dressing the kids up, eating some doughnuts, squeezing some babies and letting the 4 year olds dose up on sugar. We just instantly felt a weight lift from our shoulders and any stresses that we might have had on route to the party were forgotten about for those few hours. How important is it to have a day every now and then where you just throw routine to one side and the chores of everyday life out the window. We don’t just think it’s important, we think it’s essential. Yes, the kids got really hyper and the noise levels got a bit loud but Nancy and Archie happily entertained themselves and Emie-Rose and Mabel were fascinated watching them and us mamas got to relax and chat in Cathy’s beautiful home, which by the way she has done up herself with her partner. It’s gorgeous. She has glitter-speckled concrete floors of dreams. She’s one seriously talented mama.

Speaking of her being one seriously talented mama, Cathy also runs two businesses – an online vintage store called Turquoise Flamingo and divine DIY workshops called Oh Me, Oh My DIY! Cathy is a self-proclaimed maximalist and her instagram account is probably one of our all time favourites, particularly her captures of her little cherub, Nancy.

We love being around people like Cathy. People who are just themselves. Real, raw, quirky, inspiring, hard-working, beautiful and honest. We have learned so much this past year. We have learned that you cannot rush something that you want to last forever. We have learned about friendship and love and passion. We have learned from amazing people that we have known for a long time and from people that we have only just met.

Life is tricky, but it can be so sweet,

October Dreaming

autumn flatlay with dusty boy designs

And all at once, summer collapsed into fall…

Some weeks are definitely harder than others. Teething, sickness, broken washing machines, broken cooker hobs, tyre punctures, unexpected bills. All small little problems but you can let them get to you and find yourself totally stressed out. We both felt a little stressed this week and had to remind ourselves on repeat that everything will be fine. Sometimes you just have to escape your usual day to day routine by finding something that relaxes you, something that makes you feel happy. For us, that’s playing around with things we love and styling flatlays. We get such a kick out of gathering pieces that catch our eye and pulling them all together to create a little story. We both adore Autumn. The leaves, the crisp air, the gorgeous light, being able to wear cosy knits, lighting candles, Halloween – we love it all. Our little flatlay story was born from our love of October.

As the saying goes, we are both so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers…

The plan tonight is to cosy up under a big blanket and just be happy,

Little Dreamers

dreaming alwaysdreaming always

Every summer, like the roses, childhood returns. Wasn’t it beautiful when you believed in everything? When life was so full of innocence, so full of adventure & so full of dreams. When summers were spent outdoors and marked by bumps and bruises from climbing trees and running wild. A time before iPads and iPhones ever existed. Before technology took over.

dreaming alwaysdreaming alwaysdreaming alwaysdreaming alwaysdreaming alwaysdreaming always

We gathered some amazing women – real-life and insta-friends – together to chat over mini scones and coffees last weekend in one of our favourite cafes – The Old Blarney Post Office. Bonus: There’s a little garden out the back for the kids to run around. It turned out to be a scorcher of a day so the sun cream was continuously slathered on and the wasps were being whacked away all morning. It was so heart-warming to see our little ones playing together as if they knew each other all of their lives. The beauty of childhood. Our pal Cathy so kindly took some photos of the gang.

It’s important to us to connect people especially other mothers out there doing their thang with this platform so we were delighted to hear everyone talking about the different projects they are working on and exchanging phone numbers and Snapchat usernames.

These mama meet-ups will be a huge part of what we do with Dreaming Always. If you would like to be a part of them, please do send us an email to info@dreamingalways.com.

We have been so humbled with all the positive vibes sent our way since we launched our website so thank you all so much.

Where Life Begins

dreaming always

Every family has a story to tell. Family is forever.

Leona had a family photo-shoot done to celebrate the arrival of her second baby, Mabel, with her husband and little boy Archie. We both just adore the photos shot by Naomi Kamat.

“The morning of the shoot I very nearly canceled. Mabel was 9 weeks old and the round the clock feeding and sleep deprivation had taken its toll, my incredibly camera shy husband didn’t want to be in any shots and Archie was hyper. Why did I draw this on myself? I dragged myself into the shower and before I knew it Naomi was at the door. I didn’t have time to put on a truck load of makeup or even dry my hair. I was worried we would look all over the place which was in all honesty the reality. I shouldn’t have worried because Naomi was amazing. She sat and drank tea with us, picking up her camera every now and then to take discreet shots. She made Archie feel at ease and caught the most precious candid moments between him and my husband that he just loves. It shows how much motherhood changes you when you look at a photo of yourself and instead of being critical of how you look you see beyond that and see you as you are in that moment exhausted but blissfully happy.”

I got it from my mama

dreaming always

“Balancing work and family life is easier said than done. It’s hard adjusting to the reality that my time is no longer completely my own. Even in the chaos of a full on work schedule over the last few years I knew I would always be guaranteed some down time each day to unwind…even it was only to sleep!”

We understand that not all mamas want to sit around discussing nappy rash and the like. We have started hosting mama meet-ups to bring like-minded mothers together to laugh about the struggles and beauty of motherhood, to talk business, to network and to share our dreams openly, honestly and with a sense of humour.

We shared pastries and coffee recently with three amazing ladies and their little ones in Leona’s home.

Ciara O’Halloran | stylist & musician

Ciara is the sweetest mama to the most gorgeous little blue eyed girl called Ailbhe. She is also an amazing freelance wedding, interiors, food and lifestyle stylist AND musician. The talent simply oozes out of her.

“It’s very important for me to show Ailbhe that pursuing what you love is a worthy and admirable goal, even if it means I have to spend time away from her. I hope it will inspire her to seek out her own adventures and do what it takes to live a happy and fulfilled life when she’s older, whatever that might entail…”

Cliona O’Connor | lifestyle blogger

Cliona makes us want to be a better version of ourselves. She is super healthy, super gorgeous & a super mama to four incredible kids. She makes us laugh out loud and we love her lifestyle blog where she discusses the reality of mamahood.

“There is the constant struggle between being the “old” you and doing the things pre-buba that you loved and being a mama. You gotta’ keep the show on the road…even when you feel like curling up in a ball and crying/sleeping/bawling”

Cathy O’Donoghue | vintage boutique owner, stylist & lifestyle blogger

Cathy has the cutest threenager called Nancy who helps her out with her gorgeous online vintage store, Turquoise Flamingo. Cathy also runs dreamy styling & wedding workshops and blogs about everything from interiors to vintage fashion. Her Instagram is also one of our all-time favourite accounts.

“I could sum mamahood up as: sleepless nights when all you want to do is sleep and the nights they’re deep in dreamland, all you want to do is wake them up! Being a mama also means loving someone so much that even their farts seem cute”
